DESCRIPTION
Directs plans, assigns and coordinates all operations of the Ink Room Department. Develop formulas for different ink systems, adhesives and varnishes according to established company procedures and customer requirements. Estimate quantity of ink/varnish. Perform internal quality control checks of internal formula. Perform vendor quality check on incoming materials. Skilled in the use of various color measurement instruments. Responsible for implementation of all polices practices and procedures pertaining to the department personnel. In addition, the ink specialist must develop and manage internal and external customer relationships to meet or exceed customer expectations.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Organizes plans and determines priorities for department operations in conjunction with production schedule.
* Produce high quality formulas.
* Mixes all finished formulas with 100% batch-to-batch consistency.
* Select formula ingredients according to customer and substrate specifications.
* Research and develop new ink and or varnish products.
* In-depth knowledge of UV, Solvent, Letterpress and Water based ink systems.
* Provide technical direction, feedback and assistance to faculty and staff.
* Perform quality testing on batches produced.
* Perform vendor testing on all incoming materials.
* Approve of all formulations before issuance to production.
* Make necessary adjustment to press side materials. (I.e. solvents, surfactants.)
* Determine type and amount of materials to mix for production.
* Maintain inventory of supplies, chemicals, ink and other raw materials and requisitions supplies.
* Maintains G-drive customer spreadsheets related to but not limited to Xenon light fast testing, K-spec numbers and other information.
* Insures lightfast formulas are current and up to date according to each customer specifications.
* Work with and assist R&D department in numerous projects.
* Assist customer service department for ink/color.
* Operate/calibrate Macbeth Spectrophotometer, hand drills, UV lamp, hot air gun, Sutherland rub tester; grind gauge and Parmarco hand proofer as well as Little Joe proofer.
* Approves and recommends the purchase of ink room instruments, equipment and departmental supplies.
* Coordinates schedules and keeps accurate records of equipment maintenance, storing, utilizing and disposing of chemicals and other hazardous materials according to approved procedures.
* Coordinates disposal of hazardous products with Safety Officer
* Maintain customer files, which may include specifications, color swatches, formulas and finished products.
* Maintain R&D reports and files of testing.
* Communicate with vendors to resolve any supply issues.
* Coordinate with vendor expectations and performance of products.
* Provide project support as required in new project development and product transitions.
