Career Level:
Experienced (Non-Manager) or Supervisor / Manager / Lead Junior Level & Senior Supervisory Positions
Description:
Our client will hire several persons this year. They are looking for engineering degreed professionals who are either a generalist in several of the skills noted above or someone who is a specialist in any one aspect.
Successful candidates can expect to spend an assimilation period from months to several years duration in the Central Engineering Office in Virginia about 40 miles west of the District of Columbia before joining one of the worldwide teams, in either a contractor's office or at a field site.
This Department of 200 or so professionals supports the projects at over 40 worldwide plant sites engaged in refining and petrochemicals. The projects all exceed $25 million in size, with some being much larger. Project completion times are sometimes measured in months and sometimes in years. The plant and EPC contractor sites are usually located in well developed countries so there are usually well developed and safe infrastructures available for family living. At any given time, perhaps 1/4 of this Group is present in Fairfax. This type of position requires extensive travel and somewhat frequent relocation (family status) - it is a nomadic life style that impacts your family and is inseparable from these positions. Uplifts in salary are sometimes paid to compensate for expatriate service.
Our client needs cost / schedule / controls experts, construction experts, project management experts, as well as solid people with detailed engineering experience (meaning project engineers more than discipline specific design engineers).
The project engineering individuals being sought have worked as project engineers during detailed engineering or have a good overall knowledge of the basic aspects of detailed engineering from the perspective they would be overseeing a contractors detailed engineering team.
Big pluses from a technical content view of your experience would be:
Experience with refinery and chemical process equipment
Experience with a gated project management system
Experience taking projects from conception through construction / start-up
Experience preparing / reviewing / working with project estimates
In the field construction experience, hands on or supervising a group or task
Project Analysis, such as benchmarking projects against a standard or other companies
Doing or immediate oversight of project controls folks / activities
Contracts experience - either writing or administration of contracts with subcontractors
Experience as an employee of a major oil or chemical company or an EPC, A&E, or E&C
Things that DO NOT count as credit to your candidacy for these positions include:...
Non refinery or chemical manufacturing / plant engineers who do projects such as restructuring a production line, adding a machine, daily production oriented activities.
those who have worked projects at a high level - executives or managers of extremely large projects.
Our client strongly prefers the five to fifteen year experienced candidate because all will have to come in to the Group and learn the Client's Project Related Systems. That means starting down in the details so they require persons who have not moved too far out of working the engineering / project management issues.
The typical new hire path for an inexperienced hire off a college campus....which is modified somewhat for an experienced hire usually consists of:
1-2 years in cost and schedule learning how to build project estimates
2-3 year assignment on a capital project team as a cost controls engineer
1-2 year assignment on another capital project team as a project engineer
1-2 year assignment on same project as a field engineer when construction starts
2-3 year Potential assignment back to home office or...
2-3 year assignment as a controls engineer/project engineer on another larger job or a project manager on a small job (20-40 million $)
These are some typical go bys but folks move through these and break off and do other things or these things in other orders. There are lots of jobs and positions in the home office that are not listed...but most of them need folks who understand project engineer / cost estimating or controls basics.
Even experienced hires often do not move directly into a Project Manager position. The client typically - after the interview - figures out the best starting assignment in the Group. Typically, if the recent experienced hire shows the skills, they will get the next assignment and move up the ladder as quickly as they can assimilate the material and apply it.
All candidates MUST HAVE:
a four year full time attendance BS engineering degree or better from a fully accredited institution.
USA citizenship or a USA Permanent Resident Visa.
At least 5 years USA industrial experience in project work in the chemical process, refining or oil / gas industry after the award of the degree
An employment history not characterized by frequent changes of employer.
Good references and a drug free record, including no DWI's / DUI's.
The client offers an excellent working environment with opportunities for career advancement and a competitive compensation and benefits package. The relocation package is extremely good.
