Summary Statement:
Applies advanced technical skills and knowledge for the application of high gloss finishes to a specified color or finish to wood, aluminum and other metallic and nonmetallic surfaces for major cabinet assemblies and related equipment of complex aircraft interior systems. Performs surface repairs and refinishing of aircraft systems both in and outside the aircraft.
Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities:
Applies high gloss finishes to components and major assemblies that are moderately complex to complex in nature, requiring experience and judgment to determine plans and action from standard procedural alternatives. Works independently and determines own priorities. Reviews work instructions and specifications to determine the methods and processes required to apply the final finish to metallic and nonmetallic surfaces of cabinetry and related equipment used in aircraft interiors. Performs moderately complex to complex filling operations related to the cosmetic appearance of the part being worked. Removes excess material and prepares the surface for finishing. Performs difficult masking operations. Selects finish ingredients and mixes them by hand or machine to obtain specified color or shade to specifications or match existing finish. Calculates mix ratios in order to mix sealant, filler materials, and paint. Applies primer, top coat paint, and any spray-applied coatings to detailed parts, sub assemblies and major assemblies of aircraft interiors to customer or company specifications and industry quality standards. Polishes and waxes finished surfaces by cutting and buffing finished surfaces. Documents the work performed on the work orders. Performs moderately complex to complex surface repairs and touch up of cabinetry and related interiors systems and equipment that are primarily in the shop. May perform repairs of equipment installed in the aircraft with direct supervision. Understands and complies with all plant safety requirements for safe work practices as stated in applicable Material Safety Data Sheets and plant safety rules. Maintains the product and work area clean and free from debris.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Formal Education, Training and Work Experience:
Minimum three (3) years experience in aircraft interiors systems and cabinet finishing or minimum five (5) years related in a cabinet finishing environment performing all the associated tasks involved in producing high gloss cabinet finishes.
Level of Supervision Required:
Works under general supervision. Work is reviewed for completion to quality standards and schedule requirements. May adapt techniques and tools to meet special needs with approval from management.
Special Skills, Licenses or Job Requirements:
Demonstrate competency in applying the following to perform normal job duties. Must be able to read and interpret blueprints. Must be familiar with and have operational knowledge of department tools. Must be able to apply various types of clear coats in the aircraft industry. Must have experience cutting and buffing polyesters, urethanes, imron and acrylic clear coats. Must be able to touch up cabinetry in the shop.
Special Training and Behavioral Competencies:
Safety training as required by OSHA. Respirator training and certification.
