Job Summary:
The Bioinformatics Application Programmer is expected independently identify and assess bioinformatics needs, implement solutions, and assess the effectiveness of the solutions. Duties will include writing code to support formatting and analysis of complex biological data sets (gene expression data, nucleotide sequences, protein sequences, molecular coordinates, etc.), which will include importing and re-formatting large sets of raw data from primary data sources to diverse downstream applications for analyses. Duties also include developing web interfaces to databases and data-mining tools and acquiring or purchasing relevant software.
Education and Experience
Required
Field of Study: Computer Sciences or related field
Degree Bachelor's
Experience: 0-6 months relevant programming experience. Demonstrated proficiency in bioinformatics.
Skills, Proficiencies and Knowledge Proficient in programming languages that are associated with bioinformatics such as R and Perl. Implementation and operation of bioinformatics software packages and the development of web interfaces using PHP, MYSQL, CSS, or HTML that will facilitate faculty access to available software. Develop and implement new algorithms for analyses of complex data sets. Communication protocols for a variety of operating systems, editors, compilers and debuggers required. A working understanding of molecular biology concepts is required.

Field of Study: Computer Science or a related discipline
Degree: Bachelor's
Experience: Two or more years of bioinformatics experience. Extensive experience with downloading, formatting, customizing, and maintaining large databases, including NCBI, SwissProt, TrEMBL, MSDB, and their derivatives. Experience with operating systems, communication protocols, and a variety of operating systems.
Skills, Proficiencies and Knowledge Ability to implement and operate bioinformatics software packages, including Mascot, Sequest, Aldente, Protein Prophet, Protein Prospector, DTASelect, Scaffold, DeCyder, EDA, Bioteam iNQUIRY, BASE, GenePix, MEV, GLIMMER, MAUVE, ClustalW, Spotfire, PipeOnline, MS-FIT, Clench and Genesis.
Hiring Range: $3,000-$3,600 mo./$36,000-$43,200 yr.
