Experience in one or more of these areas is highly desired: Biomedical Informatics (knowledge discovery, data analytics, integration, and visualization of multi-modality biomedical data and development of related computational tools), Modeling and Simulation (organ models in multiple dimensions; predictive, mathematical and mechanistic modeling of biological processes; multi-scale modeling of human physiome; 3-and 4-D visualizations of images), or Systems Medicine (predictive, patient-centric, personalized medicine based on integration and analysis of data from all sources). Specific medical application areas of interest to the Division include: breast cancer research, vascular and pulmonary diseases, traumatic brain injuries, wound healing, immunology/inflammation, and neurobiology. The successful candidate must demonstrate an interest and ability to work as an independent researcher and to work on interdisciplinary, cross-cutting teams for collaborative efforts.

Some examples of biomedical engineering include:
- Designing computer systems to monitor patients during stages of care, or to monitor healthy persons in unusual environments
- Developing strategies for clinical decision making based on expert systems and artificial intelligence
- Constructing and implementing mathematical/computer models of physiological systems
- Investigating the biomechanics of injury and wound healing

Some examples of biomedical informatics research include:

- Developing automated and semi-automated machine learning tools for biomedical applications
- Architecting software applications and web services
- Architecting and developing data pipelines to integrate information from a range of data sources including, but not limited to: text, images, informatics and clinical research databases.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is internationally known for its high performance computing and networking. CSED is comprised of multiple groups, including the Modeling and Simulation Group, and the Applied Software Engineering Research group, many of whose members are actively involved in biomedical research projects. Candidates will be capable of integrating into the research team to enhance the Laboratory’s growing research program in computational medicine, systems medicine, and computationally intensive data analytics across multiple modalities. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in writing proposals and developing additional sources of funding that support research and development work within the Division. Applicants should be experienced in interpreting, reporting, and presenting analysis results to national and international audiences. Outstanding skills in communication and teamwork are required for an environment that will involve problem solving by working with and through other people and interaction with sponsors.

Qualifications Required
The position requires a Ph.D. or an M.D. with a background in Biomedical Informatics/Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering with a focus on biomedical research, or a closely related discipline, and at least 2-5 years post-graduate level research experience. Candidates must have a proven record of research accomplishments, excellent communications skills, and a strong desire to work in a team environment. A background in computer programming and project management experience is highly desirable. An ability to be flexible is essential.
