Purpose:
The Computational Sciences and Engineering Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications for the position of Research Scientist in the Cyberspace Sciences and Information Intelligence Research (CSIIR) Group in the area of Machine Learning.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Successful candidates for the position of Data Analytics Researcher will work in a research and development environment focusing on anomaly detection, deception detection, data integration. The position requires innovative thinking about methods for machine learning, unsupervised learning, probabilistic modeling, parallelizable algorithms, and algorithm evaluation methods. Qualified applicants will be expected to design, implement, and evaluate data analytics solutions and integrate algorithms into working solutions. Qualified applicants will be expected to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams and participate in national and international forums for the development of significant new concepts or novel approaches. Qualified applicants will be responsible for developing technical solutions for cyber security, health care, information operations, knowledge discovery, and intelligence analysis related to national security. Successful candidates will author peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release.


Qualifications Required:
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a directly related field and 0-2 years of relevant experience is required. Candidates must have a proven record of research accomplishments, excellent communications skills, and a strong desire to work in a team environment. Qualified applicants must have: * Research experience with at least one area of machine learning, such as Bayesian inference, supervised learning algorithms, and statistical relational learning;* Excellent programming skills (experience with Python, Scala is preferred); * Hands-on skills and experience in writing high-quality code for data analytics of relational, multi-dimensional data, preferably cyber and network security analysis;* Excellent communication skills for conveying technical material to both scientists and non-scientists in both written and oral presentations;* Self-disciplined work ethic and eagerness to tackle challenging research problems. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designated position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a directly related field and a minimum of 2-5 years of relevant experience is preferred. Candidates who have significantly contributed to open-source projects are preferred. Experience developing and managing research projects and familiarity with federal funding procedures, regulations, policies and practices is preferred.
