Purpose:
The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking qualified individuals to apply for a UNIX/Storage System Administrator role. The candidate will work within the HPC Operations group to support all activities of NCCS.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Monitor and perform daily administration of a large HPSS (High Performance Storage System) environment. Monitor system performance and capacity. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve application/hardware related issues. Manage hardware/software configurations. Provide liaison with remote users, operations personnel, etc. Install, configure, support, and maintain UNIX systems and application software on Linux platforms (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS). Develop and maintain system support procedures and documentation Analyze and solve conceptual and complex problems/situations Perform scripting/automation work (shell scripting, Perl, Python, etc.) Perform capacity planning including tracking historical usage, monitoring current usage, projecting future resource usage and assessing overall resource demands. Monitor and track performance, prepare status reports and recommendations for improving performance and increasing business continuity. Maintain recent levels of software and firmware and apply appropriate patches or updates as necessary or recommended by the vendor. Stay current with new storage technologies and identify options for upgrades and enhancements to the environment. Provide and maintain detailed technical documentation and diagrams of the storage infrastructure. Define and implement procedures and standards surrounding storage administration duties. Participate in scheduled on-call rotation.Ability to work as a team player. Ability to plan, organize, prioritize tasks, and complete assigned projects with minimal supervisions.
Qualifications Required:
Qualifications Required: Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A minimum 3 years of experience with UNIX/Linux system administration is required. Solid understanding of UNIX-based operating system, including kernel function, paging/swapping, LVM concepts, and performance tuning. Experience installing/configuring UNIX peripherals. Knowledge of networking concepts and basic services (DNS, DHCP, etc). Strong communication skills. Ability to communicate technical issues to both technical and non-technical people.Experience with Fibre-channel and/or Infiniband fabrics.Preferred Qualifications: 5+ years of UNIX/Linux system administration experience is preferred. Experience with TSM or other similar backup and disaster recovery solutions/hardware a plus. Experience with configuring /administering storage in a SAN environment desired. Experience with creating and using tiered storage is strongly desired.Special Requirement:This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
