Purpose: The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), which hosts several of the worlds most powerful computer systems, is seeking highly qualified individuals to play a key role in improving the security, performance, and reliability of the NCCS computing infrastructure. This includes supporting the fastest supercomputer in the world, Titan, which was recently announced as the scientific research community's most powerful computational tool for exploring solutions to some of today's most challenging problems. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with the ability to work within the parameters of a project to achieve the necessary goals. The candidate will work in the Infrastructure and Networking team within the HPC Operations group to support all activities of the supercomputer center. Major Duties/Responsibilities: Major Duties/Responsibilities: Installing, configuring, and maintaining computer system software Working with the team to define and implement best practices and standards within the organization Diagnosing system operational problems quickly and effectively Coordinating with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems Tuning operating systems and applications to increase performance and reliability of services Automating systems administration tasks utilizing both open source configuration management tools and in-house scripts Providing reliable and efficient backups/restores for all managed systems Documenting system administration procedures for routine and complex tasks Participating in a on-call rotation providing24-hour, 7-day support and off-hours maintenance windows The position is also responsible for system implementation/integration into the NCCS environment and systems performance analysis. Qualifications Required: Minimum Qualifications Required: The successful candidate will have a Bachelors Degree in computer science or closely related field and 2-4 years of relevant experience. Must have a strong working knowledge of Unix system fundamentals. Minimum of 2 years of experience managing Linux/UNIX operating systems in a heterogeneous environment Ability to develop and maintain programs and scripts that aid in the operation and automation of administrative tasks using various shell and scripting languages (bash, Perl, Python) Solid understanding of networked computing environment conceptsPreferred Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in computer science or closely related field and 5-7 years of relevant experience. Experience deploying and maintaining automated configuration management software such as Bcfg2, CFEngine, or Puppet Experience building custom packages for Linux distributions, particularly using RPM Experience deploying and maintaining virtualized environments, preferably using VMWare Experience with open source system monitoring solutions such as Nagios Experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting any of the following: MySQL, Apache, FlexLM, Postfix, OpenLDAP, RT, NetApp filers, VMware Familiarity with common protocols such as: DNS, DHCP, LDAP, SNMP, SMTP, HTTP, SSL Ability to identify requirements and to define, plan, and implement requisite solutions Strong interpersonal and communication skills Ability to work as a team player Ability to plan, organize, prioritize tasks, and complete assigned projects with minimal supervisions Experience configuring and troubleshooting enterprise-class network switches, routers, or firewalls Experience implementing systems-level security technologies and following security best-practicesSpecial Requirement:It is required of this position the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position willalso be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
