Purpose:
The Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate (NSED) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for Director of the Fusion and Materials for NuclearSystems Division. ORNL provides leadership in the science underpinning the development of nuclear technology for energy, national, homeland, and economic security and is managed by UT Battelle for the U.S. Department of Energy. ORNL maintains and applies capabilities in nuclear materials management and isotope production, advanced modeling & simulation and systems engineering, and in fundamental nuclear engineering science to solve challenging nuclear problems. This position will be responsible for collaborating with the leaders in ORNLs core nuclear engineering science capability and for applying this capability to problems related to the development of fusion and fission energy. The position reports directly to the Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear Science and Engineering.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Establish and lead experimental and theoretical capabilities that address the scientific basis for nuclear technology development, with particular focus to include materials in fusion and fission environments, nuclear fuel technologies, theoretical and experimental plasma physics and plasma enabling technologies, irradiation experiments in reactors and spallation neutron sources, remote handling, and advanced mechanical design.Provide collaboration and seamless integration with the other NSED divisions that focus on modeling & simulation and nuclear system engineering, and isotopes and nuclear material management to advance NSEDs overall vision and goals.Partner and collaborate with other ORNL organizations, U.S. and international laboratories and universities to advance nuclear science and engineering. Represent ORNL before advisory committees. Provide direct and/or supervise direct point-of-contact program management interface to sponsoring organizations, including the DOE Office of Fusion Energy Sciences and the Office of Nuclear Energy.Execute line management responsibilities including supervision of group leaders, budget and business plan preparation, salary planning, staff recruitment and development, employee relations, and performance management.


Qualifications Required:
Qualified candidates must have a PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Plasma Physics or closely related field with at least ten years of experience. Candidates must have at least five years of experience managing at a group or division level in a research organization. Candidates must have a proven track record of developing and executing a nuclear science vision and strategy and a demonstrated ability to work with a broad spectrum of people in a fast-paced research environment. Domestic and international travel may be required.
