The successful candidate will work on a team with researchers of the Scientific Data Group of CSM and application scientists from the Materials Science and Technology Division. Major Duties/Responsibilities: The main aspect of this position will be in working with a multi-laboratories collaboration on a QMC Framework for Predictive Capabilities in Material Science, which develops advanced material science software, efficient data management workflows, and data repositories, which will accelerate discovery of advanced materials and fundamentally alter how QMC (continuum quantum Monte Carlo) data are produced, acquired, processed and used by the material science and chemistry communities. The framework will need to be flexible supporting continuing theoretical development and providing rapid paths towards broader use in next-generation computing The candidate will work with the developers of a Quantum Database, which stores essential QMC simulation data and their provenance and provides a gateway to other discovery tools and also serves as the reference QMC data set to validate new QMC development in methods, algorithms and codes on new architectures. The candidate's responsibility is to research and develop novel solutions for material scientists utilizing the ADIOS, (http://www.olcf.ornl.gov/center-projects/adios/) framework. Topics to be addressed include: The development of higher-level APIs to be used to material scientists, based on the ADIOS framework Use in transit processing techniques to perform data management tasks, minimizing the usage of the storage system Use provenance collection techniques to store the provenance of all code executions as well as the data lineage of the derived datasets Define the requirements for, and assist in developing system software, libraries and tools that meet the users needs Conduct research and report results in journals, technical manuals, and conferencesFor technical questions, please contact Scott Klasky at THIS EMAIL Qualifications Required: Qualifications Required:PhD in computer science or a related field, and have experience or background in one or more of the following: High Performance Computing Data /computational Grid systems and middleware Solid programming experience (e.g. C, Fortran) Databases Computational Material Science Additional qualifications include: An interest to interact with scientists from application domains to understand the technology they use, and to apply and adapt Computer Science techniques to these domains A background in designing software in either a research and development laboratory, or in the enterprise domain Additional Information: Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
