Purpose: The Computer Science and Mathematics Division in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a senior scientist to lead and continue the development of a world-class research group in computational Earth sciences. In addition to carrying out research, the successful candidate will provide technical leadership and management of the Computational Earth Sciences Group, create partnerships with other similar research groups to carry out program goals, and actively seek Department of Energy and other external funding. The candidate will represent the Computer Science and Mathematics Division, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Department of Energy in professional activities, will prepare annual performance evaluations of group staff, and will oversee the group budget. The Computational Earth Science Group at ORNL is committed to leadership in the development and analysis of global high-resolution Earth system models with an emphasis on (1) numerical methods that are efficient, scalable to millions of cores, highly accurate and include explicit quantification of uncertainty; (2) model driven collection, analytics, and evaluation of climate related data; and (3) global biogeochemical and hydrological cycles.ORNL has made a substantial commitment to building and supporting a collaborative effort in comprehensive Earth System Modeling, including algorithm development, performance efficiency, implementation on Leadership Computing Facilities and design of scientific simulation experiments. The Computational Earth Sciences Group Leader will work with the Oak Ridge Climate Change Science Institute which has been created to develop and exploit an Earth System Modeling enterprise that will apply the scientific capabilities of our staff and our leadership-class computational facilities to project future climates and provide the basis for assessing likely impacts, potential adaptations to changes in the environment, and the effectiveness of various mitigation options. ORNL hosts leadership class facilities for DOE, NSF and NOAA. Members of the Computational Earth Sciences group are expert in developing scalable algorithms and computational methods for Earth System Modeling. The environmental implications of climate change and the feedbacks of the carbon cycle with changing conditions are studied by group members developing new land models with dynamic vegetation as a component of the climate system. Understanding the basic physical mechanisms and biogeochemical processes above as well as below ground is the focus of the Computational Earth Sciences group that allows collaboration and participation in a variety of computational science projects. Major Duties/Responsibilities: The major duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following: Conduct and publish high quality research in areas related to computational earth science. Collaborate with application scientists in atmospheric, terrestrial, ecological, hydrological, and data systems science inside and outside of the laboratory under the umbrella of the Oak Ridge Climate Change Science Institute to advance the scientific mission of the laboratory, the Department of Energy and other sponsors. Interact with the appropriate program offices and other agencies to develop and maintain program funding for basic and applied research in relevant areas of computational Earth science. Develop new research directions as a basis of continued funding and the overall health of the group. Represent group-level work to review committees and outside bodies as appropriate. Manage staff within the group, including the selection and retention of highly qualified staff; the development of staff capabilities; and ensuring that staff members are effectively utilized, rewarded, and motivated. Manage the group budget. Provide leadership in all areas of ES&H and full implementation of integrated safety management in the group. Qualifications Required: A Ph.D. in a scientific discipline with an emphasis in computational methods and 5+ years of related research experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. The group leader's expertise should complement areas already represented in the group, which include climate, sub-surface and ice sheet modeling (see http://www.csm.ornl.gov/climate_dynamics/). Demonstrated experience in leading and managing research and development teams is required. Demonstrated ability to write research plans and proposals and to project a vision for future research relevant to computational science is needed. A successful record of developing research partnerships and collaborative relationships with universities, industry, and research laboratories is necessary. Excellent interpersonal skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, and strong personal motivation are essential. An excellent record of research, including publications in scientific peer reviewed journals is required.
