Purpose: Under general supervision, the incumbent will focus research on membrane separations to address challenges in critical materials for clean energy economy. This position resides in the Synthesis & Properties of Novel Materials Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Major Duties/Responsibilities: Develop and evaluate highly selective membranes using a variety of robust materials such as ceramic composites, zeolites, carbon, high performance polymers, and inorganic-polymer composites to perform cost-effective energy efficient separations Conduct membrane fabrication, characterization, and performance evaluations Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements. Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics. Qualifications Required: A PhD (or equivalent) in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related science and engineering discipline, must have completed all degree requirements before starting their appointment, and be within five years of receiving their Doctorate. A strong background in membrane separations and materials chemistry with demonstrated capability of innovative and independent research is required. Hands-on experience in membrane fabrication, characterization, and performance evaluations are keys to success. Expertise in membrane characterization with electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and other advanced material characterization tools is also required. This position is for one year with the option to renew term annually for a maximum of three years. Work Directions and Interfaces: Position reports to the Group Leader, Synthesis & Properties of Novel Materials, in MSTD at ORNL.
