Purpose:
The Biosciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a biochemist, mineral chemist, material scientist or chemical engineer or related field to work on a multi-disciplinary project producing, identifying, and characterizing nanoparticles predominantly produced by microorganisms. Biologically produced nanoparticles may be useful in photovoltaic and light emitting applications. Recent research has investigated magnetites, metal sulfides and semiconductors.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with a team using anaerobic microbiology techniques, electro/surface chemistry, analytical and physical characterization to discover new products and pathways. This position offers access to the outstanding facilities for analytical biochemistry and physical characterization tools at ORNL. Applicants with good analytical skills and hands on experience for the synthesis and characterization of physical properties of nanostructured particles and thin film morphology using SEM, TEM, XRD, FL, PL, combined with microbiological experience, chemical equilibrium, electro/surface chemistry are desirable. This person will be expected to design and execute laboratory experiments, analyze quantitative data, write and communicate results to the scientific community. The applicant must have the ability to work in a team, interact effectively with colleagues and demonstrated ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience.


Qualifications Required:
A Ph.D. in physical or material science, biochemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, microbiology or a related field is required. Applicants should not have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before employment.The following skills are required for this position:
  • Design, execution and analytical characterization of biogeochemical experiments
  • Quantitative analysis of reactions using electron microscopic, liquid/gas chromatographic, spectroscopic, and luminescent methods
  • Effective writing and presentation skills, demonstrated by a strong publication record from previous research
