Purpose: The Building Equipment Research Group within the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC) in the Energy and Transportation Science Division (ETSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants capable of assisting principal investigators on projects as part of an expanding program. BTRIC focuses on four main areas: 1) research and developmentof new materials, components and systems technologies for energy efficiency in buildings, 2) whole-building and community integration (energy efficiency, renewable energy, and to grid), 3) improved energy management in existing buildings and industrial facilities during their operational phase, and 4) market transformations from old to new in all of these areas.Candidates will have the opportunity to work with experienced staff and utilize BTRICs wealth of experimental facilities, which have been designated as DOE National User Facilities. This Center is a recognized focal point for addressing technical problems confronting the U.S. buildings industry, whether residential or commercial. Major Duties/Responsibilities: The selected candidate(s) will work with other researchers on projects, collaborate with research staff and partner organizations on future research initiatives, assist senior managers on research projects, network with related organizations, interact with existing sponsors in pursuit of additional research funding, and assist in preparing proposals and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others. Qualifications Required: A Ph.D. in engineering or related discipline and a minimum of 2 to 7 years of professional experience is required. Demonstrated proficiency in fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, and experience in experimental testing in the area of space conditioning equipment and water heating is desired. Familiarity with numerical calculation and statistical data analysis techniques are required. Knowledge of building science in general, and mechanical systems and controls is desired. Excellent communication skills, oral and written, are important expected attributes and candidates will be expected to develop or maintain strong relationships through active participation in building industry organizations and events. Oral presentation skills are needed to make presentations to sponsors and peers, effective writing skills for preparing reports, proposals, and publications/journal articles, and strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership. No security clearance is required for this position. Some travel is required.
