Purpose: The main function of this position is to support the robotics group with a primary focus on polymer additive manufacturing. The candidate should have experience with polymer extrusions, understand processing parameters and the variety of extruders, melt spinning and heat treatment. The candidate will likewise need to learn how to service and maintain the commercial polymer additive manufacturing systems. In addition, the technician will be called on to help assemble test fixtures and conduct test in support of ORNL's robotics activities. Major Duties/Responsibilities: Job duties include preparation of materials, maintenance and operation of the extruder, conducting experiments on multiple materials and multiple deposition systems. These activities will support the ORNL Manufacturing Demonstration Facility. Work will consist of extruding multiple materials into filaments that will be tested in FDM systems. The technician will maintain the polymer AM systems by monitoring the inventory, providing periodic maintenance and helping with the printing and post processing of parts. The technician will support the robotics activities by assembling test beds and helping maintain the work areas. He or she will also support the carbon fiber and composites group with processing, melt spinning and heat treatment Qualifications Required: This position requires an Associates Degree in pre-engineering or equivalent. The candidate must have experience with polymer extrusion, heat treatment, melt spinning and material processing. The candidate must have at least 5 years of experience in material processing, compounding and operating extrusion equipment.
