Purpose:
Goal of Project: To advance the modeling of the physical, chemical, and radiological properties of fractionated fallout from nuclear tests and/or domestic terrorist events.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The post-doctoral researcher will assist with current projects in ORNLs Nuclear Security Modeling group relating to national technical nuclear forensics. The researcher will assist in a comprehensive review of fractionation theory including physical, chemical and radiological factors. The research will include how to best model fractionation in the predictive sense based on this theoretical review. The predictive models will help specify which parameters are relevant to fractionation and its correction. The research will include an investigation into the limitations of fractionation modeling to help quantify the accuracy and uncertainties in its prediction and correction. The models will be based on previous and existing work that accounts for different detonation environments to include historical NTS and Pacific tests and modern urban and water surface burst scenarios.


Qualifications Required:
The successful candidate will be the primary researcher for investigating the sensitivity of fractionation models to the physical and chemical properties of the fallout debris. The successful candidate would have a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, physics, mathematics, or related nuclear forensic fields. Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, project managers, and sponsors.The ideal candidate would have working knowledgeof the science of national technical nuclear forensics to include the collection, analysis, and interpretation of radioactive samples. Since the project involves computer modeling, a background in FORTRAN, Java, C++, and other related languages is highly desirable.This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
