Purpose:
The Safeguards & Security Technology (SST) Group within the Nuclear Security & Isotope Technology Division (NSITD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks a recognized R&D staff member to support current and emerging research and development opportunities in global security and nuclear nonproliferation. The primary mission of the Safeguards & Security Technology Group is to conduct R&D that can be applied to global efforts to reduce threats associated with nuclear assets.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The SST group is seeking an accomplished R&D engineer/scientist with significant experience in nuclear fuel cycle operations and verification approaches used by the safeguards and arms control communities. The selected candidate will be expected to help lead and grow ORNLs role in current and emerging R&D missions; focused on the full spectrum of nuclear material protection, control and accounting methods for global safeguards and nonproliferation.The individual chosen for this position will have experience with equipment and approaches used domestically and internationally for monitoring fuel cycle activities associated with mining, milling, conversion, enrichment, fuel fabrication, energy production, and spent fuel storage. Additionally, a qualified candidate should have experience working with federal sponsors at the DOE/NNSA, DHS, DOD, DTRA, and international collaborators such as safeguard professionals within ESARDA, the IAEA...The duties of this position will vary with each project, ranging from the development of containment and surveillance concepts, unattended system design, prototype development, concepts of use, and deployment of specialized technology in operating environments. The duties also include responsibility for mentoring new staff and developing and providing training courses for educational programs.The individual selected for this position will intermittently serve as a SME/technical interface with sponsors, customers, and stakeholders in the area of safeguards and nonproliferation technology development.
Qualifications Required:
The ideal candidate must have an advanced degree (M.S. or PhD) in Physics or Nuclear Engineering with a strong background in containment and surveillance systems and techniques for establishing continuity of knowledge. The candidate should have a minimum of 12 years experience in nuclear safeguards and nonproliferation, and working knowledge all aspects of nonproliferation verification methods. Demonstrated ability to coordinate the efforts of others associated with technology development and deployment efforts. A working knowledge of treaties and agreements associated with international safeguards and arms control is a plus. Excellent human relation, oral and written communication skills are requisite for this position to interact with both group members and a broad range of national and international collaborators.Moderate domestic and international travel is expected with this position.The position requires a DOE Q clearance or the ability to obtain one.This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.Equal Opportunity Employer
