Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Purpose:
The position seeks to enhance Oak Ridge National Laboratorys (ORNLs) reputation as a global science leader, exemplary national laboratory, and valued member of the community through strategic internal and external communications. The position also includes duties related to the planning and coordination of visits of dignitaries to ORNL based upon the station of the visitor, the purpose of visit, probable staff interest and related current events of the community.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Provides strategic communications support to ORNL and specific research directorates as directed. -Develop and implement a strategic communications plan for research directorates to for ORNL programs, including coordination of information within ORNL and communications with the Department of Energy (DOE), the public, local and state governments, other federal agencies, industry and international partners, and the scientific community.
  • Prepare, edit and maintain project fact sheets, newsletters, and appropriate written material. Edit both technical and general-science related materials for content, consistency, clarity, grammar, and syntax to ensure compliance with customer requirements.
  • Supports the volunteer activities of the Team UT-Battelle and the Team UTB Advisory Committee as directed
  • Promotes awareness of the Laboratory through participation at community events.
  • Supports the Laboratorys programs for group and public tours as well as the speakers bureau.
  • Oversees the execution of itineraries including social events, ceremonies, briefings, transportation, billeting, communication, security and other services as directed.
  • Assure adherence with Provides official protocol principles, including DOE guidance, for visits involving federal, state, and local government officials.
  • Coordinates conferences and special events as directed.
  • Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.


    Qualifications Required:
    The candidate must possess a Bachelors degree in Communications or a business-related field and five to seven years of experience in communications, web design, government relations and event planning, or possess and equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent personal, oral and written communication skills are required. The candidate must be at ease with public speaking and with representing UT-Battelle at public events. Knowledge of the principles, methods and procedures of Protocol, the services required and courtesies afforded to distinguished visitors in planning and developing itineraries and social events is required. Must possess the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. The candidate must have the ability to work both independently and with all levels of researchers and staff in a team-based environment. Must possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop and implement solutions.QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED: An understanding of ORNLs programs and a familiarity with the Oak Ridge regions civic and business stakeholders is desired, as is the ability to translate complex technical language and ideas into language easily comprehensible to non-specialists. Previous experience with DOE is preferred.
