Purpose:
The RF, Communications, and Intelligent Systems Group in the Measurement Science and Systems Engineering Division (MSSE) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a software-defined radio (SDR) communications engineer for the creation, design, and development of a broad spectrum of SDR systems, i.e., radio communications systems that are software programmable, in support of the ORNL Cognitive Radio Program. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers actively developing advanced communications systems for national security applications. The RF, Communications, and Intelligent Systems Group performs R&D in four core areas: robust communications in extreme environments, cognition and intelligent systems, tagging, tracking, and locating systems, and RF
and microwave-based measurement systems. The Groups capabilities include the development of communications platforms, system architecture design, learning from signals, custom electronics design, model-based development, hardware-in-the-loop simulations, novel antenna design, and electromagnetic characterizations.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Design and prototype SDR-based communications systems
Design and develop signal processing techniques for communications systems
Conduct communications systems analysis
Establish communications systems requirements specifications
Select appropriate software and hardware to fill requirements
Participate on technical teams
Participate in preparing white papers and proposals
Prepare and deliver presentations to sponsors, technical peers, and at professional society meetings
Prepare technical reports for sponsors, program managers, and technical peers
Qualifications Required:
The successful candidate should have a Ph.D or an M.S. degree with equivalent experience in electrical engineering and 1-to-5 years of relevant experience related to SDR and cognitive radio skills, including RF electronics design, RF modeling and simulation tools (MATLAB, SIMULINK, SYSGEN, RHAPSODY, etc.), communication systems (transmitters, receivers, antennas, filters, modulation techniques, etc.) and electromagnetic fields. Qualifications include:
Knowledge of MATLAB and Simulink modeling and simulation tools
Creation, design, prototype, test, and troubleshooting SDR and cognitive radio systems
Microprocessor programming and experience with multi-core processors
Development of communication waveforms at the physical and data link layers
Experience with poly-phase signal processing
Experience with OFDM signal processing
Good communication skills in a team environment
Experience in technical or scientific writing in order to prepare reports, presentations, and journal articles
The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance. A current DOE or DOD clearance is preferredAdditional desired attributes include:
Knowledge of the following programming languages: C/C++, Assembly, Java, Verilog, and UML/SysML
