Postdoctoral Research Associate - Organic/Polymer Chemist / NB50386742
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)

Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Purpose:
OVERVIEW: The Chemical Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) currently has a postdoctoral position available for an Organic/Polymer synthetic chemist with expertise in synthesis and characterization of polymeric materials. The goal of this project is to demonstrate a design approach for novel, amorphous, hierarchical, micro
  • and mesoporous organic framework (POF) materials with superior capacity, binding strength, and sorption dynamics that are chemically, thermally, and mechanically stable for CO2 capture and separation. We will take advantage of small angle and quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements at ORNLs Spallation Neutron Source to characterize porosity, dynamics and surface interactions of the POF materials. The experimental research will be accompanied by on-going computational exploration of the structures, CO2 capture properties and modeling of neutron scattering. The project is highly collaborative and takes advantage of expertise in many divisions at ORNL including chemical, computational, and neutron science disciplines.PURPOSE: Under general supervision, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct research specifically in synthesis and characterization of polymer organic frameworks.

    Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Conduct synthesis of POFs using literature and new synthetic techniques
  • Characterization of POFs and their structures using multiple techniques including in situ neutron scattering, TGA, FTIR, NMR, surface area and pore size measurements (both for BET and specific gases)
  • Measurement and interpretation of CO2 absorption data
  • Participate in neutron scattering measurements and data analysis
  • Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

    Qualifications Required:
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: The incumbent will possess a PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or a closely related science discipline, must have completed all degree requirements before starting their appointment, and be within five years of receiving their Doctorate. Must possess demonstrated expertise in organic and polymer synthesis and characterization techniques. Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills are mandatory. The abilities to be a self-starter, to work independently and willing to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort are required. Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs is required. The abilities to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines are required. QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED: Experience in neutron scattering techniques or computational modeling is a plus. This position is for one year with the option to renew term annually for a maximum of two years.

    Work Directions and Interfaces:
WORK DIRECTION AND INTERFACES: Position reports to the Organic Chemist, Surface Chemistry and Catalysis Group in the Chemical Sciences Division. Interface with administrative staff, managers and visitors to ORNL.
