Purpose:
The Chemical Separations Group in the Chemical Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a computational chemist with prior experience in the application of computer-aided molecular design methods to solve problems in ion recognition.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Work with a diverse team of scientists seeking both to advance scientific understanding of chemical recognition and separation phenomena, as well as to put this understanding to use in solving real world applications
Independently formulate research problems and design research strategies, and work with experimentalists to guide the design of receptors for molecular and ionic species
Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
Participate in the initiation of new research directions and development of research proposals to compete for internal and external funding
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
Qualifications Required:
A Ph. D. in Chemistry or closely related field is essential with expertise in two or more of the following disciplines: physical organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, metal coordination chemistry, de novo computer-aided molecular design, high throughput screening based on force field methods, and the application of solvation models to predict thermodynamic properties in condensed phases. Familiarity with the LINUX operating system, ability to program in FORTRAN, and ability to conduct electronic structure calculations in multiprocessor platforms are essential skills. The candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors. Candidate must have demonstrated capability to produce peer-reviewed journal articles and to contribute to the production of research proposals. The incumbent must be self-motivated, safety conscious and possess interpersonal skills. The incumbent must be capable of innovative, independent research. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues is required. Must provide three letters of reference and a list of publications when applying for this position.
Work Directions and Interfaces:
Position reports to the Group Leader, Chemical Separations Group in the Chemical Sciences Division. Interfaces with administrative staff, managers and visitors to ORNL.
