Purpose:
The Residential, Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency Group within the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center, at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in the areas of in the areas of combined heat and power assessments, industrial assessments, facility energy management and waste stream/recycling assessments.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Conduct field evaluations of U.S. military installation utility plants and analyze the operational and economic viability of combined heat and power systems at the plant. Conduct field evaluations of U.S. military industrial facilities to seek out opportunities to optimize their manufacturing processes and energy usage. Conduct field evaluations of U.S. military facilities waste streams to determine the technical and economic viability of repurposing the stream for use by the local community.
Qualifications Required:
A Ph.D. in mechanical, industrial, civil engineering or related discipline with experience in combined heat and power, industrial process, and waste stream assessments is required. Some industry experience is desired. Experience in a field environment with energy system analysis tools including, but not limited to, infrared imaging devices, power system analytical tools, and thermal system analytical tools is required.This position has the following physical requirements:-Working in extreme cold and heat and exposure to frequent temperature changes-Working in an area where noise levels can exceed 80 dB-Climbing ladders on a daily basis-Working in confined spacesExcellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactionswith sponsors, peer reviews, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles are required.Must be willing to travel within the United States.The ability to obtain and maintain a Q Security clearance is required.Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building and partnering.Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 12 months, contingent on successful performance and continued funding.For more information regarding the Building Technologies Research and Integration Group, please visit:http://web.ornl.gov/sci/ees/etsd/btric/
