Purpose:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Under general supervision, serve as a Sample Environment Development Technician supporting the development, design and implementation, and Sample Environment Systems, controls, components and subsystems for the Sample Environment Development Team, in the Instrument Engineering Group, at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Assembles, installs, troubleshoots, and tests specialized laboratory equipment, including cryogenic apparatus, vacuum systems, furnaces, magnet systems, gas handling systems, pressure cells, humidity cells and other unique sample environments as required.
Serves as Laboratory Space Manager (LSM) of the Instrument Engineering laboratory by:
Maintaining inventory of appropriate tools, gas cylinders, bulk hardware etc.
Ensures the lab space is neat and orderly.
Writes and maintains the lab Research Safety Summary (RSS).
Ensures the space meets and exceeds ORNL Safety Requirements (ES&H).
Performs equipment lifts using facility cranes.
Assists in the development of new designs, operating programs of equipment, test procedures, and work plans.
Provides and assists in the documentation of Sample Environment Equipment including drawings, specifications, user manuals, operating procedures, wiring diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams, schematics, etc.
Ensure a safe and efficient work environment and compliance with ESH&Q procedures and programs.
Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of professional values and ethics.
Qualifications Required:
Associates degree in Engineering or Science, with a minimum of five years of experience working with laboratory equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required, preferably in a laboratory environment. Ability to perform hands-on work to troubleshoot, diagnose, debug technical equipment and systems. Ideal applicant must be able towork independently and interface in a team environment. Good interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor are essential. Must be able to perform tasks which are moderately physically demanding, such as frequently climbing stairs, walking throughout a large facility, and occasionally lifting devices weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office. Qualifications Desired:Associates Degree and 7 or more years of experience working with laboratory equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required, preferably in a laboratory environment. Some experience in or around radiological areas is preferred. Experience with one or more sample environment types is preferred (e.g., cryogenic, vacuum, magnetic, high pressure, gas systems). Familiarity with 3D CAD systems, particularly Pro-Engineer / Creo strongly desired.
