Purpose
The Safeguards & Security Technology Group within the Global Nuclear Security Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, seeks an Research and Development Engineer for the Security Systems team. The primary mission of the Safeguards & Security Technology Group is to develop and apply safeguards and security technology and methods that improve the overall system(s) for protecting assets of concern. The candidate selected for this position will be expected to contribute to current and emerging technology development efforts for global security projects.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
The Safeguards & Security Technology group is seeking an Research and Development Engineer to develop and effectively integrate both lab developed and commercially available safeguards and security technologies into deployable working systems that supports the needs of domestic and international safeguards, global security, and arms control applications. The duties of this position will vary with each project, ranging from the design of specialized electronic circuits to the integration of COTS equipment into complex and specialized security/tracking or monitoring systems. This position also requires competence in technical writing and oral presentation of work.
Experience in both sensor system design and device development is required for this position. Additionally, an ideal candidate should have some experience with designing, packaging and deploying technology in harsh environments, data protection schemes, tamper protection, and performance testing. The candidate must be familiar with common software development tools, knowledge based systems, and COTS device interface requirements. The position also requires familiarity with low power and analog electronics design, low power digital electronics design, RF systems, embedded software design and data acquisition systems.
The individual selected for this position may intermittently serve as a technical interface with sponsors, customers, and stakeholders in the area of safeguards and security technology development.
Qualifications Required
The ideal candidate must have an advanced degree (M.S. or PhD) in Electrical or Computer Engineering with a strong background in low power analog and digital design, RF systems, microcontrollers and sensor integration. The candidate should have a minimum of 5 years experience of performing applied research and development and demonstrated ability to contribute to technology development efforts.
Other desirable technical skills include ASIC design, microcontroller software development, battery charging/monitoring circuits, PLD/FPGA logic design, desktop graphical programming (C++, C#, Java, etc.) and a broad operational experience with wireless devices and networks. A working knowledge of standard encryption and authentication methods is a plus.
Excellent human relation, oral and written communication skills are requisite for this position to interact with both team members a broad range of national and international collaborators.
Moderate domestic and international travel is expected with this position.
The position requires a DOE “Q” clearance or the ability to obtain one.
