Purpose
The Materials Science & Technology Division (MSTD) is seeking a technical staff member researcher for the nuclear fuels characterization and testing program. The successful candidate should assist our team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in expanding the broad pre-irradiation and post-irradiation testing program for commercial and advanced nuclear fuels.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
This position provides an opportunity for a staff member to provide technical support for our programs for commercial and advanced nuclear fuels such as high temperature gas-cooled coated particle fuels, mixed oxide (MOX) fuels, and plutonium burner fuel designs. The staff member's responsibilities include:
- Characterizing nuclear fuels using such methods as ceramography, optical and electron microscopy, gamma spectroscopy, high temperature testing and fission product transport, and physical property measurements to provide a distinctive and world-leading scientific identity for ORNL and resulting in high impact scientific advancements
- Demonstrating expertise in radioactive materials and laboratory operations
- Characterizing fuels in hoods, glove boxes, and hot cells
- Serving as a primary resource to MSTD and ORNL for this research program and to research partners
- Coordinating research activities with other ORNL research programs to enhance leading edge science.
Qualifications Required
The position requires extensive work experience in hands-on technical support roles in the handling, examination, testing, and design and fabrication of nuclear materials. A B.S. or M.S. degree in nuclear or chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, or closely related research discipline is preferred. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and enjoy working in a team environment. Candidates also must have or be able to obtain an L or Q clearance. The successful candidate must also foster and maintain high standards in Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance for all of the group's activities.
