Purpose
The Real Time Systems (RTS) Group in the Measurement Science and Systems Engineering (MSSE) Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking a research and development staff member to develop embedded software and perform data analysis.
The RTS Group is composed of Ph.D., M.S., and B.S.-level engineers, scientists, and other technical resources that conduct applied development activities in high-performance computing systems and networks for the generation, acquisition, analysis, and management of real-time information. The group investigates, develops, and applies leading-edge technologies for high-speed, multi-channel systems that support many concurrent users, with an emphasis on hardware, architectures, and embedded software. As well as development, the Group performs basic and applied research on computing architectures using advanced devices from ORNL, and industry.
R&D projects typically require design and systems-level integration of commercial and custom hardware and software across Linux, UNIX, or Windows environments. These systems are highly available, accurate, and secure. They perform advanced signal processing, statistical analysis, control, and database services to generate, obtain, analyze, and store highly precise data. RTS research supports programs in energy research, national security, and biomedical engineering. Recent sponsors include the DOE, FBI, DOD, IAEA, and U.S. corporations.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Conduct directed research and development for networks, computing architectures, distributed real-time systems, DSP, and computer security.
- Design software by using tools such as, but not limited to, PyUML, IBM Software Modeler, Telelogic Rhapsody, and Rational Software Architect.
- Interact with relevant DOE program offices, other Federal agencies, and Industry to develop and maintain a high professional reputation for the RTS Group, MSSE division, and ORNL mission areas.
- Participate in technical conferences and professional societies.
- Publish original work in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports.
- Develop and identify new intellectual property.
- Create, design, prototype, test, and provide problem resolution for advanced processing systems.
- Participate in identifying and developing research proposals.
Qualifications Required
- The position requires a degree in a science or engineering discipline strongly related to networking, computing, or computational architectures. For candidates with a B.S. degree, 4-to-8 years of relevant experience are also required. For candidates with a M.S. degree, 2-7 years of relevant experienced are also required.
- Have an ability to use model-based design tools.
- Be a self-starter and collaboratively work with other senior researchers and technologists within the RTS group and across ORNL
- The candidate must have experience developing software for scientific applications, knowledge of reliability, maintainability, and availability (RMA) calculations and processes, programming knowledge for firmware for FPGAs, GPGPUs, or both, experience in communications theory, and VHDL.
- The candidate must be able to use statistical analysis calculations and tools for RMA.
- The candidate must have applicable programming experience in algorithm development, systems-level integration, and embedded processors for the Linux, UNIX, or Windows environments. Languages should include, but are not limited to, C, C++, VHDL, Simulink (MATLAB), and Python.
- Experience with simulation and analysis methods and tools such as MATLAB, Octave, or SciPy. LabVIEW experience is desired, but not required.
- The candidate must be motivated to work in a team environment.
- The candidate must have excellent communication and documentation skills. Must be able to support presentation of research results to Laboratory management, sponsors, industry, and academia.
- Due to the nature of research conducted in this group, the successful candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q clearance. Candidates with government clearances are strongly encouraged to apply.
This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
