Purpose:
The Cyber & Information Security Research (CISR) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducts cutting-edge research in cyber data analytics, data visualization, situational awareness, secure communications, sensing and signal analytics to defend, understand, secure, & defeat known and unknown adversaries to protect the nations energy, economic, and security infrastructure. Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The CISR Group is currently seeking an energetic, innovative, and dynamic research scientist with machine learning expertise to pioneer security research and technological advancement. The selected staff will contribute to current and future projects in the following areas (but not limited to): Cyber Data Analytics Anomaly & Intrusion Detection Advanced Analytic Tools Data Visualization techniques Malware Detection Network Security Vehicle Security Energy Grid Security Intrusion Analysis


Qualifications Required:
Provide solutions to cyber security problems through data science by creating novel mathematical models or finding novel applications of known data-science techniques. Communicate ideas and research results through effective oral presentations at conferences or to sponsors and through well-written reports for sponsors and established publication venues. Participate on multiple R&D teams in the development of significant new concepts or novel approaches to cyber security. Development of algorithms and methods for detecting and preventing network attacks; and for protecting sensitive information and data from insider and external threats. Author peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports and proposals for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums. Lead small teams of research, especially undergraduate or graduate interns. Contribute to idea generation and technical writing of proposals for future research.


Work Directions and Interfaces:
Basic Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, or related field. Background in data science, applied mathematics and/or statistics. Programming knowledge in at least one computer language. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is subject to Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of state of the art in machine learning. Hands-on background and experience in data analytics research, especially large scale, streaming, heterogeneous data. Proficiency in Python language experience strongly preferred. Experience with existing Deep Learning Frameworks. Knowledge and experience with cyber security data, such as network flows, AV alerts, other logging data, PCAPs, etc. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research. Strong desire to work in a team environment. Excellent communications skills (including experience in technical writing and oral communication) and experience in both writing technical documents and presenting research. Ability to write and generate ideas for research proposals to major funding agencies. Demonstrated ability for positive and interactive sponsor interactions. Project management experience along with familiarity with federal funding procedures, regulations, policies and practices. An interest in national security related issues.
