The Computational Sciences and Engineering Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for the position of Senior Research Scientist in the Cyber & Information Security Research (CISR) Group. The selected candidate will be an established researcher with extensive qualifications for leading research programs, capable of developing substantial programs and take on organizational leadership roles. The selected candidate will be responsible for planning, conceiving, and directing strategies for growing and enhancing the ORNL advanced cyber and cyber-physical security research programs. The Cyber & Information Security Research (CISR) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducts cutting edge research in cyber security, situational awareness, visual analytics, secure communications and information security, and sensing & signal analytics to defend, understand, secure, and defeat known and unknown adversaries to protect the nations energy, economic, and security infrastructure. Formulating and leading new cyber research programs, advanced technical solutions for cyber security, information security, knowledge discovery, and intelligence analysis related to national security topics such as intrusion detection & analysis, network security, advanced analytic tool development, and data visualization techniques. Author peer-reviewed papers and technical reports and participate in research proposals to major funding agencies. Present and report research results and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research for possible technology transfer of solutions, products, principles or technology. Assume a leadership role on multiple R&D teams. Participate in national and international forums for the development of significant new concepts or novel science-based algorithmic approaches to Cyberspace and Cyber Security.
Basic Qualifications: Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a directly related field and a minimum of 5 years experience outside of Ph.D., with a strong emphasis on Cyber Security is required. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level and SCI security clearance.Preferred Qualifications: National recognition and expertise in one or more of the following: cyber vulnerability assessment, intrusion detection systems and countermeasures, network protocols and monitoring, host forensics and memory forensics, malware analysis and triage, mobile security, cloud security, network traffic analysis, and emulation of large-scale computer networks A proven record of developing and growing new research programs Evidence of relevant research expertise in the form of technical publications, presentations, software, and/or knowledge of applications Strong expertise in software development with the ability to quickly prototype and perform analysis of components and end-to-end systems for Cyber Security and Cyber Warfare at the embedded-system, host, network, and enterprise levels. Excellent communications skills, fiscal management experience, and a strong desire to work in a team environment Experience in interpreting, reporting, and presenting research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels Strong hands-on background and experience in machine learning algorithms and applications for relational semantic and/or cyber data, with a view toward emerging cyber security technologies Extensive knowledge of advanced computational analysis methods Demonstrated hands-on skills and experience in writing high-quality code for data analytics of relational, multi-dimensional data, particularly for cyber and network security analysis Strong knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals Demonstrated track record of working with customers independently or in teams to develop requirements, proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration.Security Requirement:This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted Q-level and SCI security clearance. In order to obtain these clearances, U.S. Citizenship and polygraphs are required. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
