Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the United States Department of Energy's largest science and energy laboratory tasked to provide the United States government agencies and departments with technology and expertise to support national and homeland security needs. The Geographic Data Sciences Team within the Geographical Information Science and Technology group (GIST) at ORNL is seeking qualified candidates to participate in exciting, cutting edge research to advance computer vision, machine learning (including deep learning) and other analytics in the analysis of high resolution geospatial imagery. Example applications include detecting and mapping the built environment, solar panel adoption, agricultural patterns, and landuse change to name only a few. As imagery analytics continue to rise in popularity, GIST distinguishes itself by meeting the challenge of scaling applications to the entire planet. Meeting national grand challenges such as mapping every building on the planet requires scaling and deploying algorithms onto the fastest computers the world has to offer including Titan ( and Summit ( Successful candidates will have a unique and exciting opportunity to work as part of a team that develops imagery algorithms for these systems and see their own successful ideas executed at unprecedented scale. Additionally, candidates will have the opportunity to publish their work, attend conferences, mentor students, interact with universities and other laboratories as the build a highly visible career on the computing capabilities and prestige at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
This position requires solid understanding and deduction with latest machine learning algorithms, including latest deep learning techniques, traditional machine learning algorithms and the math needed to advance them for geospatial imagery analysis. This position requires extensive understanding of methodologies and practices used in computer vision, machine learning and remote sensing research. The work involves developing, adapting and porting image analysis algorithms. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in proposal development for potential external and internal funding.

Qualifications Required:
Basic Qualifications: PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, or related fields with 2+ years or applicable experience or an MS with 7+ years experience. Strong understanding of machine learning and computer vision techniques required. Prior publications in machine learning for geospatial and computer vision domain. Experience with large scale geospatial data is required. Experience with data fusion with remote and proximate sensing data is required. Knowledge of GIS coordinate systems and large scale data manipulation is required. Experience programming in C, C++, Python and MATLAB is required. Experience with deep neural network applications such as image recognition, image segmentation, scene understanding with high resolution remote sensing imagery is required. Hands on R&D experience with at least one main stream machine learning framework, such as Caffe, Tensor Flow, Theano, Torch is required.Preferred qualifications Strong coding ability on GPU, either CUDA or OpenCL in a Linux environment.
