Purpose:
The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) within the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to fill a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the growth mechanisms and controlled synthesis of nanomaterials, including atomically-thin two-dimensional crystals and nanoparticles. As a postdoc, you will work on a basic science project, funded by the Materials Science and Engineering Division at the Department of Energy, that seeks to understand the fundamental growth mechanisms of nanomaterials through a combination of nonequilibrium synthesis techniques and time-resolved, real-time, diagnostic techniques involving (for example) chemical vapor deposition, pulsed laser interactions, and optical spectroscopy. Under general supervision, you will develop and apply techniques to understand how nanomaterials grow and how to control their assembly for functional applications, working primarily within the Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials group at the CNMS, but working with a diverse group of experimentalists and theorists across ORNL. OVERVIEW: As a national user facility, the CNMS supports a multidisciplinary and dynamic research environment to understand nanoscale materials and phenomena, and offers a diverse spectrum of nanoscience research activities including a nanofabrication facility; laboratory-based research on macromolecular materials, catalysts, functional nanomaterials, and magnetism and transport; characterization with electron microscopes, scanning probes, and x-ray diffraction and scattering; and laser spectroscopy


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
This postdoctoral position represents an excellent opportunity to learn and perform cutting-edge research in nonequilibrium synthesis, in situ diagnostics, and processing of nanomaterials within the stimulating multidisciplinary environment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. You will join research teams at the CNMS and carry out research on growth mechanisms and controlled synthesis of a variety of nanomaterials by primarily physical vapor processing or pulsed laser-based techniques, including two-dimensional (2D) materials, nanoparticles, or carbon nanostructures, with the principal goal of high-quality and high-impact scientific publications. You will also help establish the user facilities in laser and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis, process nanomaterials, collaborate with and support users, and help operate and maintain the facilities. Other responsibilities include:--Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements--Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics--Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, extensive work at laser laboratories, and possible exposure to laser radiation normally associated with operation of lasers for scientific research.


Qualifications Required:
Basic Qualifications:A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related science completed in the last five years. Preferred Qualifications:Experience in the synthesis and processing of two-dimensional materials, or of oxide films and nanoparticles.A strong background in laser-based synthesis, processing, and nanomaterial characterization techniques is an advantage.Experience with the implementation of in situ spectroscopic diagnostics is highly desirable.Electron microscopy experience for the characterization of nanomaterials is an advantage.The candidate should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication, and presentational skills, and should have demonstrated the ability to interact effectively with research staff at all levels and to work within a multi-disciplinary team. A strong record of productive and creative research, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences OTHER INFORMATION:The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension.
