The National Center for Computational Sciences of Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications for the position of Data Center Manager. This position provides day-to-day oversight and management of a data center facility. This individual plans and oversees completion of facility modifications to support new systems, and is the single point of contact for all facility work and electrical and mechanical infrastructure for the computer facilities. This individual will interface with project managers, contractors, maintenance personnel, and division staff responsible for the operation of server, storage, and network platforms within the data center. This position will ensure that facility issues are identified and repaired quickly to maintain continuous operation of the data center.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary interface between the data center customers and the supporting organizations. This includes owning outage planning, communication, and coordination activities. Lead or participate in the planning and implementation of all upgrades and maintenance associated with a high-performance computing center. Plan, coordinate, and oversee the installation of new computer equipment, storage systems, and supercomputers. Relocate and when appropriate decommission systems and other computer equipment toachieve optimum performance per customer request. Maintain computer room in a safe manner; ensure that all work in the computing center is performed in a safe manner and that all safety procedures and work plans are accurate, up to date, and followed. Assist in the development of a comprehensive strategic plan for the ORNL unclassified supercomputing facilities. Act as an advocate for the Operations Control Room staff and work to integrate them into day-to-day NCCS operations. Deploy and maintain a high-quality data center inventory of equipment, including support expiration information. Train and equip vendors and ORNL staff for safe execution of work within the data center. Develop and maintain data center training and appropriate Research Safety Summary or Work Plan controls and procedures. Ensure non-essential equipment and materials are kept out of the data center to reduce particulate matter and potential for fire hazard. Maintain a tour ready space for high-profile visitsand photo-ops. Maintain appropriate data center environmental conditions including air quality, temperature, humidity, etc.

Qualifications Required:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field. Relevant experience may be substituted for degree requirement. Familiarity of electrical and mechanical systems in use in a data center environment including feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, chillers, air handling units, and CRAC units. Data center management experience. Demonstrated capability to coordinate complex work in an expanding computing center environment. Experience in developing and executing a set of customer defined Standard Operating Procedures. Ability to coordinate all maintenance activities in a computing center among all stakeholders and to write maintenance job requests at an appropriate level of detail to expedite the work is required. Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate and work effectively with contractors, maintenance personnel, customers, and center staff.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and experience with ITIL, CMMI, TIA-942 or other industry-accepted data center standards, including member participation, is desirable. Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate and work effectively with contractors, maintenance personnel, customers, and center staff. Experience working in a fast-paced, high-performance data center environment. Experience managing and supporting a 24x7 mission critical operation.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
