The Publications organization at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks an experienced technical writer and editor to support the lab through writing and editing that will help ensure its scientific and technical communications products clearly and accurately present the research and scientific developments of its staff and programs and its software documentation, tutorials, and front-end information are audience appropriate, meet the needs of the user community, and enhance user experience. The position will primarily serve teams, initiatives, and organizations within the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD).
Edit, rewrite, and write software documentation, tutorials, wikis, internal communications materials, blog articles, technical reports, scientific journal articles, conference papers, manuals, presentations, and other products to clearly and effectively communicate with a range of internal and external audiences for CCSD and various directorates and divisions across the lab. Revise and rewrite various types of reports, proposals, journal articles, conference papers, presentations, and visual materials for research staff to enhance clarity, coherence, and organization while ensuring compliance with established rules of grammar and syntax. Edit and revisewith special attention to idiom and syntaxthe manuscripts of nonnative speakers. Enhance the accuracy and readability of these documents to ensure a high rate ofacceptance in the open-literature arena. Revise complex written material without loss of technical accuracy and with meticulous attention to logic, consistency, and audience appropriateness. Mentor authors to help them improve their writing skills and enhance the products they produce. Provide project management and guidance to ensure publications meet ORNL or the outside publishers requirements and are effectively managed through their completion or delivery to the publisher. Suggest visual materials in support of scientific and promotional information needs. Provide consultation to customers on appropriate formats, including print and electronic, and methods that will communicate most effectively to the intended audience. Establish, in consultation with customers, priorities and schedules for meeting deadlines. Schedule and coordinate complex projects. Monitor and stay within budget for these activities. Oversee and coordinate efforts of teams assigned on larger projects, working with electronic publishers, graphic artists, photographers, and printers to ensure professional quality and adherence to budgets and schedules. Understand and apply ORNL publications standards and styles or external (e.g., journal) guidelines. Adhere to DOE publishing requirements. Advise customers on usage, style, format, methods, and document preparation and production.
Basic Qualifications Bachelors degree (preferably in English, a science, or engineering) and 24 years of experience in technical editing and writing OR a masters degree (preferably in English, a science, or engineering) with 13 years of experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications Bachelors degree (preferably in English, a science, or engineering) with 57 years of experience editing the work of researchers in scientific and technical fields for style, tone, consistency, and grammatical correctness OR a masters degree in English, technical writing, or a scientific field with 46 years of experience. Excellent command of standard American English style and usage, as demonstrated by writing and editing samples, and conversant with standard style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, ACS Style Guide). Comfortable working in LaTeX, Git and GitHub, wikis, HTML, and open-source platforms such as WordPress. Firm grasp of standard business computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office applications, especially Word; Adobe Acrobat). Experience creating and updating software documentation, tutorials, front-end information, and web content and editing technical reports, presentations, and journal articles. Ability to easily grasp scientific and technical concepts and clearly communicate them to a general science-interested audience as well as a more scientifically trained audience such as other researchers and sponsors, as proven by previous experience.
