Purpose:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out more than 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. ORNL is planning major improvements and upgrades to its neutron sources over the next few years including a Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) of the SNS accelerator complex and construction of a future Second Target Station (STS) at the SNS. Further, there are ongoing projects to improve neutron scattering instruments and technologies at both HFIR and the SNS. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov. Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks to hire a Division Director for the newly created Neutron Technologies Division. The role of the Neutron Technologies Division is to develop and deploy innovative methods and technologies for transformative new approaches to neutron production and scattering. The division consists of 5 groups:
  • Source Development and Engineering
  • Instrument Methods, Projects, and Technologies
  • Instrument Data Acquisition and Controls
  • Instrument Engineering
  • Project Management


    Major Duties/Responsibilities:
    The Division Director will lead and coordinate staff and resources to:* Advance state-of-the-art in neutron generation and moderation for current and future ORNL neutron sources. * Provide technical oversight and operational support for SNS source components.* Develop and support the technical components/systems supporting neutron instruments, including: neutron optics, choppers, polarization devices, neutron detectors, and the hardware/software/interfaces enabling instrument control and data acquisition.* Identify enabling technologies that will allow for growth in size and impact of the neutron scattering programs at SNS and HFIR.* Support the conceptual development, planning, engineering design, and execution of major neutron scattering instrument projects, including both upgrades and new instrument construction.* Provide expertise to support directorate needs in survey, alignment, and metrology; neutronics; and the development of new neutron scattering methods/techniques.* Continue to develop strong resource management and consistent practices/standards for engineering projects.* Execute line management responsibilities including supervision of group leaders, budget and business plan preparation, salary planning, staff recruitment and development, employee relations, and performance management; may include supervision of staff matrixed from other ORNL Directorates.* Represent NScD for various review committees, advisory committees, visitors, conferences and workshops. Will be expected to lead talks, lectures and various tours for dignitaries.* Assume the responsibilities of NScD Associate Lab Director in his/her absence as requested.* Commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct by holding yourself and others to the highest scientific, professional, and ethical standards.     Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelors of Science required in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or other science related field
  • Ten years of experience in neutron science or engineering management
  • Demonstrated experience and vision required to advance the neutron scattering program at ORNLPreferred Qualifications:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Desire to work in a team environment, with collaboration at all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization
  • Previous experience working in a DOE research program
  • Previous experience at a neutron scattering facility is desired
  • Previous experience in managing construction and engineering projects


    Work Directions and Interfaces:
    Reports to the Associate Lab Director for Neutron Sciences Directorate. Interfaces with facility users and stakeholders, directors of other divisions within the Directorate, other ORNL divisions, partner laboratories, Department OfEnergy headquarters and the DOE site office.


    Measures of Effectiveness:
    Meets goals established in the business plan and Lab Agenda. Provides work direction to managers and staff for technical systems and operations. Operates with the budget and defined policies and regulations. Maintains accurate accountability and operates within procurement authority, absence approval, travel regulations, and staffing policies.
