Purpose:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the United States Department of Energy's largest science and energy laboratory tasked to provide the United States government agencies and departments with technology and expertise to support national and homeland security needs. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace. We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in support of our Computer Science Research Group (CSR). In this postdoctoral role, you will have an opportunity to contribute to cutting edge research to explore resilience for extreme-scale high-performance computing systems. The CSR Group addresses challenges in technical computing at the largest scales, especially scientific and engineering modeling and simulation, from a computer science perspective. We research, develop, and deploy solutions in programming environments, system software, and the engineering of scientific software with the goal of making current and future high-end computer systems more productive and more usable. Our work is motivated and validated by close collaboration with scientific application teams.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Responsibilities for this position include working closely with the project team to create, evaluate, and publish novel research ideas and software solutions, supervise and mentor students, and collaborate with our partners and sponsors. Research activities include, but are not limited to: Analyzing and modeling the cost-benefit trade-off between performance, resilience and power consumption for current and future-generation extreme-scale computing systems, Exploring the design space for optimizing this cost-benefit trade-off in future systems, and Tuning this cost-benefit trade-off dynamically at runtime in future systems. Publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals, such as SC, ICS, ISC, IPDPS, HPDC, MASCOTS, DSN, and IEEE TPDS. Actively collaborating with industry, academia, government labs, and applications developers in a variety of venues.Emphasis will be placed on: Practical metrics, analyses, and models for performance, resilience and power consumption in extreme-scale computing systems. Easy-to-use modeling and simulation tools for design space exploration and for understanding dynamic runtime tuning, including parallel discrete event simulation. Interfaces and mechanisms for coordinating this cost-benefit trade-off across the system.This work will be carried out in a multi-disciplinary team in support of the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF, http://olcf.ornl.gov) as part of a prestigious US Department of Energy Early Career Award.


Qualifications Required:
Basic Qualifications: Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering or related discipline. Previous experience fault tolerance for parallel and distributed computing systemsPreferred Qualifications: The ability to take initiative on research insights to bring them to fruition through publication or demonstration on mission applications. Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, andstrong personal motivation. The ability to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
