Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Purpose:
The Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) within the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position in condensed matter physics, studying the magnetic and electronic properties of chemically-tuned crystals. Under general supervision, the successful candidate will synthesize antiferromagnetic and superconducting materials, then perform thermodynamic and transport property characterizations in order to evaluate the feedback from theory-knowledge and chemical intuition hypotheses.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Synthesis of materials (non-oxide, intermetallics) in polycrystalline or single crystal forms, using a variety of available techniques of flux, solid-state, solvothermal, etc.Structural and chemical characterization of materials using X-ray (and neutron) diffraction and electron probe microanalysis Physical property characterization of materials using a variety of measurements such as magnetization, resistance, thermoelectric, etc.Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely mannerEnsure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirementsMaintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Qualifications Required:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:A PhD in physics, chemistry, or a related discipline completed within the last five yearsPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Background in synthesis of crystals and structure refinementsExperience with characterizing superconducting materials and magnetic materials Knowledge of the recent advances in materials in the condensed matter physics fieldA strong record of productive and creative research, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences Scientifically motivated and safety consciousAbility to set priorities, multi-task, and adapt to a dynamic environment to meet deadlinesAbility to work with a measure of autonomy and participate in a collaborative, team environmentOTHER INFORMATION:The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension.
