Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

The Nuclear Fuel Materials (NFM) Group within the Fusion and Materials for Nuclear Systems Division (FMNSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for a senior scientistto lead basic and applied research on synthesis, characterization, and behavior of actinide-bearing fuels with a focus on ceramics. The scientist is responsible for identifying key ceramic fuel systems that have the potential to enhance the performance of fission reactors of today and the future, pushing forward their development. The activities include processing of nuclear fuel related ceramics, development of structure-property relationships for solid-state actinide ceramics, production of feedstock for small scale and integral fuel tests, and post irradiation characterization. In this manner, it is expected that major gaps in applied and basic understanding regarding the properties and behavior of these advanced fuels may be filled. The scientist is expected to work with other scientists, engineers, technicians, postdocs, and students to lead research projects in this area. The individual is also expected to fully integrate these efforts with the larger nuclear fuel cycle and materials science activities at ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsible for safe and efficient operation of actinide ceramics laboratory and gloveboxes under fuel cycle research programs by working with and leading other scientists, engineers, postdocs, and students. Facilitate irradiation tests and advanced post-irradiation characterization of nuclear fuel ceramics. Work with other elements of the fuel cycle research program and others at the laboratory to maintain a high level of scientific productivity.Responsible for presenting and reporting high-impact research results and publishing scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
