We are looking for entry-level, highly-motivated applicants to work on scientific computing R&D for nuclear reactor multiphysics applications. We have an opening for a postdoctoral research associate in the Reactor Physics (RP) Group within the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division (RNSD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate. You will have the opportunity to work independently and in a team environment. Your work will include performance optimization of single
  • and multi-physics software, scalability on CPUs and GPUs from hundreds to ten thousand processors, and multi-physics coupling.

    Major Duties/Responsibilities:
    In this position, you will be expected to thoroughly document work performed, effectively work with project sponsors, and contribute to the identification and development of research proposals. You will also have effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors, both domestically and internationally. Your work will involve conceptualizing and performing applied research and development in scientific computing in one or more of the following areas:
  • Software re-design, development, and testing for efficient parallel performance of the MPACT neutronics code to GPUs on the Titan supercomputer
  • Numerical methods for efficient, multi-physics coupling of the Shift Monte Carlo code with the VERA core simulator for ex-core detector response during reactor transients
  • Numerical methods for efficient, multi-physics coupling of the BISON fuel performance code with the VERA core simulator for prediction of fuel failures and optimization of power ramp rates
  • Integration and application of the Dakota optimization and uncertainty quantification tools with VERA for commercial nuclear industry applications
  • Evaluation of time-integration and multi-physics coupling of computational fluid dynamics, surface chemistry, and nuclear fuel performance to predict fuel failures due to crud-induced localized corrosion.

    Qualifications Required:
  • Ph.D. degree in nuclear engineering and knowledge of computational science as demonstrated through research and associated publications.
  • Experience developing software with two or more computational nuclear analysis codes or codes suites, such as SCALE, CASL, or NEAMS.
  • Familiarity with modern software development practices, such as unit testing and revision control, and the ability to work with both FORTRAN and C++.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills
  • Proven publication track record.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with a wide range of reactor systems and concepts
  • Capability to understand and interpret reactor and nuclear system operational and fuel cycle performance
  • Working knowledge of one or more complementary technical areas such as thermal-hydraulics analysis, clad-coolant chemistry, or thermo-mechanical fuel performance.Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
