We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research specifically in measuring and analyzing surface adsorption energetics and spectroscopic identification of surface reactants relevant to catalytic reactions of oxygenates and alkanes. A portion of your work will be designing experiments aimed at correlating surface reactions with surface properties of oxides and supported metals. In this role, you will work in close collaboration with other researchers involved in a Basic Energy Sciences (BES) funded project on Fundamentals of Catalysis and Chemical Transformations.OVERVIEW: The Surface Chemistry and Catalysis Group of the Chemical Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) currently has a post-doctoral position available for a Physical Chemist with expertise in surface spectroscopy of heterogeneous catalysis. The group conducts research into surface chemistry on oxides and metals supported on oxides and catalytic reactions of oxygenates and alkanes on these surfaces. Our primary research interests are focused on mechanistic understanding of dehydration, dehydrogenation, ketonization, and coupling reactions with the goal to reveal the fundamental properties of oxide and metal oxide surfaces that control the reaction pathways. Our approaches include experimental and computational studies of kinetics and reactivity, spectroscopic identification of surface reactants under in situ and operando conditions, and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) based approach to surface chemistry and synthesis of model catalysts as an approach to understanding structure-function relationships in catalysis. Arrays of techniques for characterizing physical and catalytic properties are in place or are currently being developed within the group. This research program also takes advantage of resources at ORNL and in particular at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences and neutron scattering at the Spallation Neutron Source. The environment at ORNL is highly collaborative and crosscutting research exists between the Chemical Sciences Division and other Divisions at ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Perform operando Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and multi-wavelength Raman studies of reaction mechanism via analysis of the surface adsorbates and mass spectrometry/gas chromatography of the evolved productsPerform Steady-State Isotopic-Transient Kinetic Analysis-Infrared Spectroscopy (SSITKA-IR) experiments under transient, pulsed and compositionally modulated conditions to achieve kinetics and spectroscopy information simultaneouslyPerform adsorption calorimetry studies to probe adsorption energeticsPerform reaction kinetics measurements using micro-reactor systemsResponsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashionParticipate in proposal developmentEnsure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirementsMaintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications Required:
Basic Qualifications:A PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a closely related science discipline completed within the last 5 yearsPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated knowledge of heterogeneous catalysis, and a demonstrated background in performing surface spectroscopic, specifically DRIFTS and Raman, and/or calorimetric studies of catalysts Experience in studying reaction kinetics and mechanisms of heterogeneous catalytic reactions Expertise in steady state isotopic transient kinetic analysis combined with IR (SSITKA-IR) measurementsExperience in chemical synthesis of oxide and supported metal catalystsExcellent interpersonal skills along with demonstrated oral and written communication skills A self-starter, able to work independently and willing to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort.Motivated and safety conscious The abilities to work on multiple tasks and to independently set priorities to meet deadlinesOTHER INFORMATION:Appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility for extension.
