The Power Electronics and Electric Machinery (PEEM) Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a power electronics post-doctoral position to conduct research on power grid related powerelectronics. We perform design and simulation of power electronics systems for energy storage, PV integration, and power flow control. Your work will contribute to controls development and regulation strategies for grid-tied power inverters, energy storage systems, and energy management strategy. You will also assist in fabrication and evaluation of power electronics systems as well as contributing to the development of creative power electronics designs for inverters and converters for grid-tied power electronics.We are the United States Department of Energy's largest science and energy laboratory tasked to provide government agencies and departments with technology and expertise to support national and homeland security needs. Our capabilities span scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • You will conduct R&D projects and help the expansion of R&D to take advantage of our multidisciplinary capabilities, multimodal strengths, and unique tools and capabilities.
  • You will be familiar with the state of the art in power electronics technology and well versed in various modeling and simulation programs.
  • Embedded system based hardware and software control expertise for micro grid applications.
  • You will carry designs through prototype building and evaluation.
  • You will network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, the industry, and the utilities.
  • Prepare new proposals to the internal and external funding agencies.

    Qualifications Required:
  • A Ph.D. in electrical engineering with a focus on power electronics applications for the grid.
  • Experience with advanced power semiconductor technology and its applications for grid.
  • Knowledge of CAD, FEA and system design modeling and simulation software tools is desired. Hands on laboratory experience performing testing and analysis is required.
  • Possess excellent oral and written skills for preparing and presenting research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, industry partners and others and at technical meetings such as IEEE sponsored conferences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to support team building and leadership.
  • A publication history in prestigious international conferences and journals.
  • Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer-reviewed journals, or presentations at national meetings, are expected.
  • Prior work experience with utilities will be valued for this position.
  • A strong dedication to scientific integrity is an important requirement.Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.This position is a full-time assignment for a maximum of 24 months, contingent on successful performance and continued funding.Some travel will be required for this position.No clearance is required.
