Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

The Plasma Theory and Modeling (PTM) Group within the Fusion and Materials for Nuclear Systems Division (FMNSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher. The PTM group carries out theoretical and simulation based research and development work in support of ongoing science and technology research for the U.S. DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Program in the Office of Science. This Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research toward bridging the multiple time scales present in magnetically confined fusion plasma simulations. The projects will focus on the use of advanced time integration schemes, e.g, projective integration, and exploiting leadership class supercomputing resources, e.g., the upcoming Summit machine at ORNL, to achieve the research goals.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Duties include, but are not limited to:-Conceptualize and perform simulation research and development in the area of multi time scale simulation.-Numerical analysis of temporal discretizaion schemes.-Develop and use of high performance plasma simulation codes. -Verification of simulation implementations, and application to specific test problems.-Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity.-Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.-Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.-Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Qualifications Required:
Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate must be within five years of completion of a Ph.D. in Physics, Nuclear Engineering or a closely related field. The applicant is expected to possess a strong background in plasma simulation with a focus on numeric methods as evidenced by prior work and publications and have a strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences. He or she should be capable of innovative research with minimal supervision and have the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, interacting effectively with a broad range of colleagues, including an international scientific audience. In addition, be motivated, safety conscious and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Candidates should have a proven publication track record. This position is temporary, full-time assignment for 12 months, with the intent to renew for a second year upon meeting performance expectations anf funding availability. Qualifications Desired: Strong interest in high performance computing, experience in the application of the methods of uncertainty quantification, as well as proficiency in Fortran, C++, and other science relevant programming languages are desired.
