Purpose:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on chemistry of polymers and processing science of polymer composite materials. As a postdoc, you will conduct experimental research around polymer-based composite materials and polymer dynamics, chemical modification of polymer resins, and fibrillar materials with additional work on new composite processing. This position resides in the Carbon and Composites Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). OVERVIEW: Our research team carries out high quality R&D focused on the strategic composite material needs of the aerospace, automotive, as well as trending areas of international composite research in chemistry and material science. The goal is to develop fast cycle process techniques and advanced low-cost thermoset/thermoplastic composite for new applications. Of special interest to our group is the developing of new polymer resin and polymer composite with excellent mechanical and other properties through chemical modification and interface engineering in nanoscale. You will help us support research for designing, synthesis and modification of thermoplastic and thermoset resin chemistries; publishing original and creative peer-reviewed research articles; and overseeing student projects.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Design/modify new thermoplastic resins and thermoplastic formulations for composite processes and large-scale 3D printing. Design of polymer composites structures, develop and modify new polymer chemistry for new composite materials applications. Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion. Help to team goals and work with other team members Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Qualifications Required:
A PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Science and Engineering, and Materials Science, or a related discipline completed within the last five years Experience with polymer chemistry, composites, and/or polymer processingPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with polyester resin synthesis, characterization, and scale-up. Familiar with epoxy and/or isocyanate based thermoset formulation. Experience with cellulose chemistry and chemical surface modification techniques Experience with green composite and biodegradibility Experience with analytical characterization techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Differential Scanning Calorimentry (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Rheology, and electron microscopes. Experience with chemical characterizations is plus such as gel permeation chromatography (GPC), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) Experience with surface modification and chemical treatment of glass and carbon fibrillar materials and with common polymer resin chemistries Experience with compounding, fabricating, and characterizing polymer composites An excellent record of productive and creative research as proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience Self-starter, capable of creative research with minimal supervision and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues Ability to function well in a dynamic research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needsOTHER INFORMATION:Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
