Purpose:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support our Scanning Probe Microscopy Group. The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) is targeting research on the effects of heterogeneities in low-dimensional materials. Our mission includes the synthesis and manipulation of materials to study the structural, electronic, magnetic, and transport properties down to the atomic level.As a postdoc, you will contribute to research in quantum materials including topological insulators, 2D atomic layers, and other atomic wires and structures that exhibit exotic electronic and/or magnetic behavior due to imperfect symmetry using Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and a new cryogenic Four-Probe STM. Your work in experimental science will include molecular beam epitaxy growth and STM imaging, spectroscopy, and transport. This research encourages development of your experience and scientific vision, and will allow you to work alongside and connect with a dedicated team of scientists. The position resides in the within the CNMS, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


Major Duties/Responsibilities:
In this position, you will: Work as part of a dynamic team conducting CNMS in-house research that advances our understanding of nanomaterials while also leading to the development of capabilities that will eventually become available to the CNMS user community. Conduct experimental research in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) combining STM for characterization and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for growth of low-dimensional materials and interfaces Manage and operate state-of-the-art scanning probe microscopes Perform data analysis and interpretation Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity Present research and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Qualifications Required:
Basic Qualifications / To be considered, you must have: A PhD in Condensed Matter Physics or a closely related field, completed within the last five years Demonstrated experience with cryogenic STM A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferencesPreferred Qualifications / This experience is to your advantage: A strong background in solid-state and condensed matter physics, including electronic structure, single-crystal characterization, and transport properties Experience with atomically precise synthesis of quantum materials and in situ characterization using surface analytical techniques A background in instrument development and detailed understanding of SPM equipment Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in English Capable of creative research with minimal direction and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues Motivation to be safety consciousOTHER INFORMATION:Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding. Work Directions and Interfaces:
Position reports to the Group Leader, Arthur P. Baddorf, Scanning Probe Microscopy Group in CNMS at ORNL and will be mentored by An-Ping Li. This position interfaces with research staff across different divisions and directorates, administrative staff, managers, and visitors to ORNL.
