Understanding the role of interfaces in driving material formation is critical to the predictive design of new classes of nanoscale and responsive materials. Teams of researchers at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) are working to understand the role of interface architecture in influencing material formation, structure, and function by establishing a comprehensive experimental and computational framework that iteratively predicts, captures, and interprets dynamic multimodal information about materials during different stages of formation. Experience in mass spectrometry (MS), scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and/or other closely related areas is ideal for this role. You will be working with a highly interdisciplinary team of scientists at the CNMS to develop and advance multimodal imaging for understanding material assembly dynamic processes at interfaces. Your work will combine MS imaging with SPM and HIM for studies of functional materials, which includes development and use of multimodal MS/SPM systems, MS/HIM system, MALDI, and advanced multifrequency SPM platforms. You will benefit from experience in the analysis and characterization of soft materials, assembly processes, and smart/responsive materials.OVERVIEW: Your research will contribute to the development of interface directed assembly theme science and the chemical imaging program in this multidisciplinary user center with a dynamic science program. The research will take advantage of, complement, and enhance ongoing scientific efforts within the CNMS and ORNL. In this role, you will further the cutting edge of the multimodal imaging, nanoscience, and materials chemistry research programs at ORNL.The CNMS (http://cnms.ornl.qov/) is a nanoscience research and user facility supported by the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The CNMS has a diverse spectrum of nanoscience activities including a nanofabrication facility; research on macromolecular materials, catalysts, and functional nanomaterials; electron and scanning probe microscopies; x-ray diffraction; theory, modeling, and simulation, and benefits from the strong interactions with the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the National Center for Computational Sciences at ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
IN THIS POSITION YOU WILL: Work as part of a dynamic team conducting CNMS in-house research that advances our understanding of nanomaterials while also leading to the development of capabilities that will eventually become available to the CNMS user community Conduct nanomaterials research using multimodal imaging methods on a combined Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS)/SPM platform, SIMS/HIM, and MALDI which will include developing/optimizing methodologies for functional materials Develop advanced data acquisition and data analysis methods for multidimensional data Collaborate with CNMS and ORNL researchers on chemical imaging experiments Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications
  • To be considered for this position, you must have: A PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related science discipline completed within the last five years A record of productive and creative research proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference presentationsPreferred Qualifications This experience is to your advantage: A strong background in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and/or a background in scanning probe microscopy Experience in big data analytics and simulations using MatLab, National Instruments data acquisition hardware, and LabVIEW programming Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience The abilities to be a self-starter, to work independently and to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort Proven ability to function well in a dynamic research environment, set priorities, multi
