Purpose:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support our Scanning Probe Microscopy Group. Weve recently created a team with the goal of using scanning transmission electron and scanning probe microscope techniques to drive, control, and understand nano
  • and atomic scale transformations in materials using advanced multi-spectral imaging and data acquisition combined with real-time feedback on large scale streaming data. As a postdoc, you will contribute to research efforts that aim to manipulate and modify materials at the atomic scale, which requires the development of novel functional imaging methods, advanced data processing routines, and real-time control of instruments unique in the world. You will also interact with an interdisciplinary research team to develop machine learning methods for rapid on-the-fly analytics and implement these methods to measure, control, and understand the nano
  • to atomic-scale interactions of local fields and electron and ion beams with matter. This position resides in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences Division (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


    Major Duties/Responsibilities:
    In this position you will: Work as part of a dynamic team conducting CNMS in-house research that advances our understanding of nanomaterials while also leading to the development of capabilities that will eventually become available to the CNMS user community.   • and field-induced material changes and probing atomic and electronic structural evolutions in situ. Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity Present research and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


    Qualifications Required:
    Basic Qualifications/ To be considered you must have: A PhD in Physics, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline completed within the last five years Background inelectron or scanning probe microscopy or advanced imaging methods A record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentations at conferences Proven track record with developing instrument control and analysis methods in LabView, Python or Matlab programming languagesPreferred Qualifications/ This experience is to your advantage: Experience with atomic force microscopy Experience with scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) including gas, liquid, heating, and bias environments Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers Ability to function well in a dynamic research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs Other information:Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
