Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace. We are looking for highly-motivated applicants to work on scientific computing R&D for nuclear reactor multiphysics applications. We have an opening for an experienced mid-career staff scientist in the Reactor Physics (RP) Group within the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division (RNSD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate. You will have the opportunity to work independently and in a team environment. Your work will include application-driven methods and software development for nuclear reactor multi-physics challenges.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
In this position, you will be expected to thoroughly document work performed, effectively work with project sponsors, cross-institutional collaborators, and contribute to the identification and development of research proposals. You will also have effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors, both domestically and internationally. Your work will involve conceptualizing and performing applied research and development in scientific computing in one or more of the following areas:
  • Numerical methods for efficient, multi-physics coupling of nuclear codes, including those within VERA, SCALE, MOOSE, and commercial and regulatory system codes
  • Software re-design, development, and testing for efficient parallel performance of the nuclear software code to GPUs on the Titan supercomputer
  • Application of software for modeling challenges in advanced nuclear reactors and existing reactors with advanced fuels.
  • Development of user features, verification, and validation to ensure software is of a production quality viable for use externally.

    Qualifications Required:
    Basic QualificationThis position requires a PhD. in nuclear engineering with ten years of experience developing nuclear software. Knowledge of computational science as demonstrated through research and associated publications. Candidates must have a strong publication record. Experience developing software with one or more computational nuclear analysis code or codes suite, such as SCALE, CASL, or NEAMS. Familiarity with modern software development practices, such as unit testing and revision control, and the ability to work with both FORTRAN and C++. Excellent interpersonal skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with a wide range of reactor systems and concepts
  • Capability to understand and interpret reactor and nuclear system operational and fuel cycle performance
  • Working knowledge of neutronics and one or more complementary technical areas such as thermal-hydraulics analysis, clad-coolant chemistry, or thermo-mechanical fuel performance.This position will remain open for a minimum of one week.ORNL is an equal opportunity employer.
