The Radiochemical Science and Engineering Group (RSEG) within the Nuclear Security and Isotope Technology Division (NSITD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate (NSED), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking applications for one or more Radiochemical Technical Professional positions to support ongoing missions with an emphasis on the production of Pu-238. The RSEG uses the unique ORNL capabilities, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC), to conduct research and supply difficult-to-produce isotopes in support of Department of Energy (DOE) missions and for other government agencies and private organizations as requested through DOE. Key characteristics of the RSEG include the unique application of hands on radiochemical processing research and development (R&D), remote operation, and computational modeling needed to support production. One of the RSEG current efforts, which the applicant will contribute to, is the production of Pu-238 that is to be used as a heat source for thermoelectric generators used on NASA deep space missions. This effort requires the application of nuclear and radiochemistry, chemical, mechanical, materials, and nuclear engineering principles to the processing and handling of nuclear materials. The successful candidate will work with experienced scientists and engineers and lead technicians towards the production of Pu-238. We are seeking one or more highly motivated, highly talented professionals to join our growing team to support a variety of missions, with an emphasis on the production of Pu-238 for use in radioisotope thermoelectric generators.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The candidate will be responsible for independently solving a variety of complex technical problems primarily in support of the Pu-238 Supply Program. Primary duties will be associated with leading efforts to solve challenges associated with pellet production/target fabrication as well as chemical processing. The candidate will be expected to guide work of junior professional staff and non-exempt technicians.

Qualifications Required:
This position requires a bachelors degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability and hands-on experience with safe handling of radioactive material. They should have experience with glove box and/or remote hot cell operations. Self-motivation, ability to work in a team, ability to lead technical projects, and a demonstrated safe work ethic are essential. Preferred ExperienceExperience leading target fabrication for irradiation efforts and/or radiochemical processing projects is preferred.
