Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 33 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: The Neutron Scattering Division in the Neutron Sciences Directorateinvites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join an interdisciplinary team to achieve hyperspectral imaging with neutrons based on compressive sensing methodologies. In this role you will have the opportunity to apply advanced imaging processing approaches to analyze inelastic neutron scattering data to construct high resolution multispectral images. This is an excellent opportunity to join a team covering theory, computing, engineering, new mathematical methods, and experimentation to create a unique and powerful scientific capability.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Develop computer algorithms and code to analyze neutron scattering data to achieve spatially resolved spectroscopy
  • Collaborate in the design, set-up, implementation, and execution of new experimental infrastructure and capabilities
  • Independently plan, design and execute experiments
  • Collaborate with other scientists and technical personnel to carry out research projects
  • Participate in the initiation of new research directions and development of research proposals
