The Biosciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an opening for a microbiologist to work on a multi-institutional project to engineer microorganisms to cost effectively convert lignocellulose into fuels and chemicals. Plant biomass represents an abundant renewable resource for the production of fuels and chemicals. However, no known organism is capable of conversion of real-world biomass substrates to fuels and chemicals at high yield and titer, and bioengineering remains in non-model organisms remains a challenge. We will accelerate the Design-Build-Test-Learn cycle in non-model organisms to rapidly develop new biocatalysts for the emerging bio-economy.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
In this position you will work in close collaboration with a team using genetic manipulation, synthetic biology, physiological characterization, systems biology techniques, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry to improve fuel and chemical production. Your work will include strain design, construction, and characterization. You will be expected to integrate with expert collaborators in transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and metabolic modeling at ORNL and at partner institutions. You will also design and execute laboratory experiments, analyze quantitative data, write and communicate results to the scientific community.Duties and Responsibilities:-Work with a diverse team of scientists. -Interface directly with internal and external partners in various disciplines.-Present research results at national scientific meetings.-Publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner. -Participate in project planning and execution.-Work with staff to develop new proposals.-Maintain detailed and accurate records-Acquire and analyze data in keeping with project scheduling-Participate in general laboratory maintenance and safety programs and associated team research issues. -Take a position of leadership for day-to-day safety operations, addressing all of ORNLs environmental health and safety requirements-Self-assess experimental research skill set and identify weakness and secure learning resources to address these issues.-Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.-Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Qualifications Required:
A Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field is required. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.Preferred Qualifications-Expertise in molecular biology and microbial genetics-Expertise in microbial metabolism-Effective writing and presentation skills, demonstrated by a strong publication record from previous research-Desire to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team-Experience with fermentation and strain characterization desired-Proven publication recordThis position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 24 months, contingent on successful performance and continued funding.
