Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

The Building Equipment Research Group in the Energy and Transportation Science Division (ETSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Post-Doctoral researcher position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment to grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to energy conversion systems including: (1) Fundamental and applied aspects of phase change processes (boiling, condensation and frosting)(2) Pressure exchange devices for work recovery and their impact on overall system performance. (3) Waste heat recovery systems (heat/mass exchanger design and associated system performance evaluation);(4) High performance water heating applications(5) Advanced vapor compression and power generation systems such as sCO2 and ammonia based refrigeration and power generation systems. You will be involved in developing experimental setups, conducting experimental campaigns, performing thermodynamic analysis and system modeling, analyzing results, and preparing technical documents and research publications. Your will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

Qualifications Required:
You will have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. You should possess the necessary background and experience in (a) thermodynamic cycle modeling, (b) experience with the design and operation of experimental thermal/fluid systems, design of experiments, and knowledge of various mechanical systems and instrumentation, and (c) solid knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat and mass transfer. CFD modeling background is a plus. Experience with heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment is also a plus. Strong communication(written and verbal) and interpersonal skills are required. Finally, the successful candidate should have strong background in project management with a proven publication/patent record.Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment not to exceed 24 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
