Job Location: Oak Ridge, TN

The Thermal Hydraulics and Irradiation Engineering (TH&IE) Group within the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division (RNSD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks an outstanding, highly motivated professional with interests in helping ORNL extend our world-leading reputation in nuclear thermal hydraulics modeling and simulation. The successful candidate will construct and lead a team developing theory, numerical methods, and software that solves the most difficult thermal/fluid issues facing the nuclear industry, achieving international recognition. ORNLs flagship computing resources and extensive computational and experimental infrastructure and expertise is available to support this effort, including capabilities being developed in the Exascale Computing Project. The person filling this position will be responsible for establishing and developing new thermal hydraulic R&D programs and identifying research directions that enable effective integration of the existing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) teams and portfolios throughout the Laboratory. The successful candidate will also lead efforts to align existing thermal hydraulic programs and define future paths for thermal hydraulic development and analysis in the TH&IE group and the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to organize and lead successful innovation in numerical methods and parallel software development and identifying and implementing state-of-the-art solutions to the most complex thermal/fluid problems. Experience in developing CFD-based multi-scale solutions, direct integration of large data sets, and integration/acceleration using reduced order models is of particular interest.

Qualifications Required:
Basic QualificationsA PhD degree with 6 or more years of experience in nuclear, mechanical, or chemical engineering or a related field is required. Clearance Requirements: The ability to obtain a DOE security clearance is required.Preferred QualificationsTen years experience is desired. Expertise in leading-edge thermal/fluids software including thermal hydraulics codes and/or computational fluid dynamics codes to solve complex real world problems with a focus on development of software for multiphase and low Mach number flows is expected. Sufficient background to facilitate direct application of developed methods and software to nuclear science and technology problems is also expected. Experience working in multi-physics computational environments and developing thermal hydraulic software on large-scale, parallel computational platforms is highly desirable. Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with peers, program managers, and sponsors. He/she should have demonstrated skills leading and/or working in a team environment, spearheading new R&D initiatives, and be motivated to innovate and think out of the box to solve a variety of challenging engineering problems. A demonstrated record of publications, awards and patents in nuclear thermal hydraulics is required.
